Crypto trader turns $450K into $8M in a month

In more than one way, Peanut the Squirrel (PNUT) has turned into something of a perfect meme coin, combining the silliness of internet jokes with actual cultural relevance. Specifically, it was named and inspired by a squirrel of the same name that animal control agents killed in a raid due to wild animal complaints. Given the social media popularity of the squirrel and its owner and the seemingly unjustifiably violent nature of the intervention, it became something of a poster child against regulatory and law enforcement overreach. Peanut’s role was further bolstered due to the political climate ahead of the 2024 presidential election, with some Trump voters practically adopting it as a symbol. Did Binance's CZ predict his own downfall?

An exclusive interview with Cointelegraph in 2018 highlighted growing scrutiny of Binance's meteoric growth. Fiv years ago, you couldn’t trade with fiat currency on Binance, yet the exchange was already garnering international attention with the highest trading volumes among its peers. That's no mean feat in the cryptocurrency industry, even in 2018, with several well-established exchanges commanding established and loyal user bases. Critics questioned why the world needed another exchange, but Changpeng "CZ” Zhao would not be deterred. In June 2018, I jumped onto a virtual call with ‘CZ’ for a one-on-one interview to discuss the meteoric growth of the global exchange. At the time, Binance only supported crypto-to-crypto trading, but a 50% fee discount facilitated by its native BNB token had been a major drawcard for savvy traders. Things are drastically different half a decade later. Binance has agreed to a $4.3 settlement with the United States government over civil re...

Mt. Gox creditors offered fresh hope with new ‘commencement of repayment’ email

The Mt. Gox trustee announced the redemption of $47 million in trust assets amid social media reports suggesting repayment to creditors could start in 2023. Creditors of Mt. Gox, a now-defunct Bitcoin (BTC) exchange that lost 850,000 BTC to a hack in 2014, have reportedly received a new email hinting at soon-to-come repay ments. Nobuaki Kobayashi, the trustee overseeing the Mt. Gox Bitcoin exchange’s estate, on Nov. 21 started sending out emails to rehabilitation creditors regarding the commencement of repayment, according to multiple social media reports. According to the alleged Kobayashi’s email circulating on social media, the trustee plans to start the first repayments to creditors in cash in 2023. Kobayashi expects to continue the repayments in 2024, but did not provide the specific timing of repayments to individual rehabilitation creditors. According to the email: “Due to the large number of rehabilitation creditors who will receive repayment, the varying types of repayments,...

Bitcoin opened the week with a shallow correction, but altcoin traders seem unaffected by the slight BTC price pullback. Bitcoin (BTC) has risen more than 120% year-to-date, indicating that the crypto sentiment has improved significantly. Solid buying has resulted in a sharp increase in crypto wallets holding more than $1 million in Bitcoin this year from 23,795 on Jan. 1 to 81,925 currently, according to BitInfoCharts data. After the substantial rally, Bitcoin could face headwinds in the near term as investors digest the macroeconomic data and events due this week. The Consumer Price Index data is set to be released on Nov. 14, followed by the Producer Price Index data on Nov. 15, and the Nov. 17 deadline to avoid a partial United States government shutdown could give rise to short-term volatility. Bitcoin is struggling to clear the hurdle at $35,000, signaling the possibility of a short-term pullback. Bitcoin (BTC) skyrocketed 28.5% in October, its second-best monthly gain of the year behind the 40% rally in January. After the strong showing in October, the next question on investors’ minds is, could the bullish momentum continue and Bitcoin extend its recovery going forward? Bernstein said in a note on Oct. 31 that Bitcoin could rally to $150,000 by 2025. The firm believes that the United States Securities and Exchange Commission will approve a spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund by the first quarter of 2024 and the ETFs may attract up to 10% of Bitcoin’s circulating supply. No concerns over Bitcoin halving supply shock, says Bitvavo CEO

The CEO of Dutch cryptocurrency exchange Bitvavo believes market dynamics will cater to the potential skyrocketing demand for Bitcoin in 2024. Supply and demand dynamics could mitigate concerns of a potential Bitcoin market supply shock during the upcoming mining reward halving in 2024, according to Bitvavo CEO Mark Nuvelstijn. The co-founder of the Netherlands-based cryptocurrency exchange weighed in on Bitcoin-related market movements in conversation with Cointelegraph during the European Blockchain Convention held in Barcelona. Related: There are now nearly 40M Bitcoin addresses in profit — A new record Nuvelstijn expressed his belief that exchanges would likely have sufficient Bitcoin supply to meet the demand from users: “If there’s more demand the price will increase, and it will keep increasing until there’s a match between price and demand.” The Bitvavo CEO added that the potential booming demand for Bitcoin would lead to increasing prices until demand cools and prices st...

Bitcoin is taking a breather after this week’s strong rally, but select altcoins may be getting ready to breakout over the next few days. Bitcoin (BTC) has been trading above $33,600 for the past two days, indicating that the bulls are not rushing to the exit. After a sharp rally, if the price does not give up much ground, it may cause FOMO and ignite another round of buying. That could push the markets further into overbought territory. However, such rallies are rarely sustainable. They eventually turn down and retest the breakout levels. Hence, Bitcoin’s drop to $32,000 can not be ruled out. The rally of the past few days pushed Bitcoin’s dominance to 54%, its highest level in 30 months. The rise in market dominance shows that Bitcoin is leading the charge higher, which is a positive sign. This suggests that traders are favorably viewing the cryptocurrency space and select altcoins may join the party soon. Daily cryptocurrency market performance. Bitcoin price holds $28K range as institutional investor maneuvering boosts sentiment

Image
Comments from institutional investors and amendments to the spot Bitcoin ETF applications could be behind the recent improvement in investor sentiment. Bitcoin (BTC) price continues to show strength this week by hitting an intra-day high at $28,516 even as macroeconomic headwinds in the United States continue to weigh on investor sentiment . It’s possible that a certain degree of BTC’s price stability can be attributed to increasing institution al activity and positive institution al investor interest in Bitcoin.  On Oct. 17, Fidelity Investments, a large asset management institution, amended their proposed spot Bitcoin ETF with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The ETF called the Wise Origin Bitcoin Trust, updated and outlined how Fidelity plans to protect customers’ Bitcoin in custody accounts and revealed risks associated with the unstable regulatory landscape of cryptocurrencies. Fidelity is following in the footsteps of other large institutions like ARK Invest and...

OK Group sunsets ‘Okcoin’ for a global transition to ‘OKX’

Founded in 2013, Okcoin will have the same name as OK Group’s other crypto venture, OKX, formerly known as OKEx. Major cryptocurrency exchange operator OK Group continues transforming its business, rebranding its crypto ventures under the single name “OKX.” Hong Fang, chief operating officer at OK Group and president of OKX, took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce that Okcoin will be rebranding to OKX over the coming months. Here’s how Bitcoin investors can trade the tension surrounding a U.S. government shutdown

Image
Rumors of a US government shutdown impact asset prices, including Bitcoin. Here’s how BTC options traders can capitalize on the 45 day funding deadline. Bitcoin’s (BTC) price bull run towards $28,000 on Oct. 1 was partially fueled by the uncertainty regarding the United States debt limit. However, the U.S. President Joe Biden signed the spending bill just hours before the Sept. 30 deadline, avoiding a government shutdown .  Investors now question if the momentum remains favorable for cryptocurrencies given that the worst-case political-economic scenario is no longer on the table. However, it is worth noting that this bill merely provides extra funding for the next 45 days, giving more time for the House and Senate to work on their funding plans for 2024. At first glance, it might be tempting for investors to use futures contracts to go long on Bitcoin. However, there's a significant risk of getting liquidated if the price suddenly drops, and it's impossible to predict whethe...

Crypto bulls are attempting a comeback. Here are the altcoins that traders are keeping an eye on. Bitcoin (BTC) is attempting to trade above $27,000 which is a positive sign. In the past few days, Bitcoin’s price held up above $26,000 in adverse conditions when the United States dollar index (DXY) was rising sharply and the S&P 500 index (SPX) was plunging. This suggests that selling dries up at lower levels. The decision by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission to delay the spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETFs) ahead of schedule also did not dent prices. This indicates that the market participants are taking a longer-term view on Bitcoin. Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart believes that an early decision was taken by the regulator as there is a risk of a U.S. government shutdown on Oct. 1. Daily cryptocurrency market performance.
